IPC, Bauer, Future and Development Hell

Research
IPC: IPC is a huge mainstream magazine and advert producer, owned by Time Warner. It is a UK company and over 26 million UK adults read an IPC magazine. Magazines that IPC produce include:
NME
Uncut
Guitar and Bass
Chat Passion
Now
Sporting Gun
Country Life

Each of these magazines have a particular audience. For example, someone that buys NME is unlikely to also be buying Country Life. Therefore, each magazine supplies to a small, particular audience.

NME is a music magazine produced weekly and is one of the worlds largest read music magazines. In 1996, NME.com was set up and fast became Europe's biggest music website, with roughly 16 million page views a month, and 1.6 million users across the globe. NME claims it is 'the worlds essential guide to the week in music'.

Acts such as The Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths, Klaxons and Oasis were all introduced on the pages of NME and are now some of the most successful groups around.

Recently, IPC was sued by Peter Andre for allowing one of it's magazines to publish false and incriminating information. Andre won the court case successfully.
Bauer: Bauer is a major magazine publisher, with a typical type of magazine being aimed at men, usually with a desire for news on classical rock. Magazines include:

Kerrang

Q
Mojo
Empire
Most of the magazines are similar in content although Bauer does publish women's magazines such as Bella, Eat In and TV Guide. Mojo, founded in 1993, contains music news and information on classical rock bands. Published monthly, Mojo has an adult readership of 100,507and most are mainly male. Their target audience is specifically men aged 25 - 44 and who can relate to most of the acts being written about. Therefore, the editor and assistant publisher are both men and typically always have been.

Future: Future is another one of the biggest main stream producer, supplying magazines such as:

Metal Hammer

Classic Rock

Futuremusic

Rhythm

Guitar Techniques

Metal Hammer and Classic Rock cover news and music genres, generally rock music, and the others are about music making. Again, these magazines have their very own particular target audience. Guitar Techniques and Rhythm are both magazines that cater for individual, amateur music makers and bands. Classic Rock and Metal Hammer supply for rock fans and enthusiasts.

Development Hell, an independent company produces the magazines Word and Mixmag. These magazines cover news, reviews and music features that cover their genre. These magazines are generally not as popular as the majors, but still have a comfortable group of readers.

The magazine Word is generally a high earning male aged between 30 and 55. 44% of readers own over £50,000 per year and 11% earn over £100,000 per year. The typical reader spends about £90 a month on music, films and books.
